Bozburun lies near the tip of the peninsula south of Bodrum, in a broad bay ringed by bare hills. The two areas are close by sea — blue cruise boats leave Bodrum and call at the Bozburun coves — but the road connection is long, because the Gulf of Gökova lies between them and the route has to go around it.

What sets the town apart is seafaring rather than tourism: it is the centre of traditional wooden gulet building in Turkey, and boats are still constructed by hand in the yards along the bay. Bozburun's past rests on sponge diving. There are no large hotels; accommodation is limited to small guesthouses and boutique properties. Walking routes on the hills lead to the ruins of ancient Loryma.
