Although Didim belongs to Aydın province, in travel terms it is served by Milas-Bodrum Airport. At the centre of the area stands the Temple of Apollo at ancient Didyma; with its columns still upright, this enormous structure was designed as one of the largest temples of the ancient world but was never completed. The modern town has grown up right around the ruins.

Didim's coastal section is Altınkum — as the name suggests, a beach of fine sand with shallow water, well suited to families. Akbük, east of Didim within the gulf, is a quieter cove made up of summer housing and small properties, without crowds. Although the two areas are close together, their characters are distinctly different.

The journey from the airport heads north and is one of the longer routes in the region, passing through Milas and Söke. Most of the road is comfortable, though some sections can get busy in summer. Didim and Akbük spread over a wide area: Altınkum beach, Didim centre, Akbük bay and the summer housing between them are kilometres apart. Addresses are usually given by complex name and navigation can fall short.
