İzmir is the centre of the Aegean and Turkey's third-largest city. The backbone of this city spread around its gulf is the Kordon, a broad seafront walking and cycling stretch that becomes the city's meeting point in the late afternoon. The Konak Clock Tower, the Kemeraltı bazaar and Kadifekale above form the historic core, while Alsancak, with its restaurants and cafés, is the centre of nightlife.

The surroundings are equally rich. Ancient Ephesus is about an hour south and the Acropolis of Pergamon a similar distance north. The village of Şirince, the beaches of Çeşme and the stone streets of Alaçatı head the list of day trips. İzmir has its own airport too; those arriving from Milas-Bodrum are usually combining a Bodrum holiday with an İzmir flight, or the reverse.

The journey from Milas-Bodrum Airport to İzmir is an intercity route and among the longest transfers in the region, running through Milas, Söke and Aydın.
