Although Kuşadası belongs to Aydın province, it is served by both İzmir and Milas-Bodrum airports. The town takes its name from Güvercinada, the small island at the mouth of the bay — joined to the shore by a causeway, the castle on it is the classic end point of the seafront walk. Kuşadası is also one of Turkey's busiest cruise ports; in season, large ships dock right in the middle of town.

The area's real draw is Ephesus. One of the best-preserved cities of the ancient world, Ephesus is about half an hour from Kuşadası; the façade of the Library of Celsus and the marble streets are the heart of that visit. The House of the Virgin Mary, the village of Şirince and Dilek Peninsula National Park are the other main excursions. Among the town's own beaches, Ladies Beach and Uzun Kum stand out.

The journey from Milas-Bodrum Airport to Kuşadası is a long route heading north, running through Milas and Söke. Most of it is comfortable, though traffic can build around Söke in summer.
