Akyaka is a small town at the very head of the Gulf of Gökova, at the foot of Mount Sakar. Two things make it unique: the Azmak River and the town's architecture. Fed by underground springs, the Azmak is a short river whose clarity is like glass; taking a boat up it and eating at the restaurants along its banks is the classic Akyaka routine.

The houses are not ordinary either. The tradition of timber-worked bay-windowed building developed by the local architect Nail Çakırhan is protected, so you will not see concrete apartment blocks in Akyaka — the houses are decorated with carved wood. The town is a member of the Cittaslow network. The strong wind that blows regularly in the afternoons has also made Akyaka one of Turkey's leading wind- and kitesurfing centres.

The journey from the airport takes about an hour. The road turns towards Muğla, crosses the Sakar Pass and then descends towards the gulf; on that descent the whole Gulf of Gökova opens up at once, turning the drive itself into an excursion. On this winding section driver experience makes a real difference to comfort.

Accommodation in Akyaka consists of small boutique hotels and guesthouses, most on narrow lanes within the town or beside the Azmak. Vehicle access is restricted on some streets; our drivers take you to the closest possible point. The town's small size makes addresses easy, but the signage is plain, so writing the property name in your booking is enough.
