Bozburun lies near the tip of the peninsula that carries its name, in a broad bay ringed by bare hills. What sets the town apart is seafaring rather than tourism: it is the centre of traditional wooden gulet building in Turkey, and boats are still constructed by hand in the yards along the bay. There are no large hotels; accommodation is limited to small guesthouses and boutique properties.

Bozburun's past rests on sponge diving; although that craft has largely given way to yachting, the town's relationship with the sea has not changed. The bay is an important stop on blue cruise routes. The surrounding coves of Söğüt, Taşlıca and Selimiye and the waters towards Datça are the main boat-trip destinations. On the hills behind the town, walking routes lead to the ruins of ancient Loryma.

The journey from the airport is among the longest in the region. After crossing the Sakar Pass the road enters the peninsula at Marmaris; the fifty kilometres that follow are single-lane, continuously winding and cross the hills. The scenery is striking but the drive is tiring and there is no lighting at night. Our Mercedes fleet and a team that uses the route regularly make the difference, and we stop for a break if needed.

Addresses in Bozburun are along the single road running around the bay, and the streets between the boatyard area and the town centre are narrow. Most guesthouses are on the slope facing the sea and the last stretch may not be drivable. Our drivers know the closest possible point.
