Dalyan is an unusual town, built not on the seashore but along a channel that runs out to the sea. What defines its view are the rock tombs on the opposite slope: belonging to the ancient city of Kaunos, these temple-fronted tombs are carved directly into the cliff and are visible from every riverside restaurant. Turning red in the evening light, that cliff face is Dalyan's best-known image.

Most travel here happens on the river. Boats leave the town and thread through the reed beds to İztuzu Beach — five kilometres of sand protected as a nesting ground for loggerhead turtles, closed to visitors after a set hour in the evening. The Sultaniye hot springs and mud baths lie on the same route, and the ruins of ancient Kaunos are also reached by boat.

The journey from the airport takes about twenty-five minutes and is one of the easiest in the region, crossing the Dalaman plain and descending to the town via Ortaca. Although the distance is short, we allow for the town's traffic slowing in summer. With flight tracking the vehicle waits for delayed landings and service continues for night arrivals.

Hotels and guesthouses in Dalyan are spread across narrow riverside lanes, and some entrances lie at the end of passages too narrow for a vehicle. Our drivers know the town's street layout and take you to the closest possible point. Accommodation on the far bank is reached by boat, in which case we drop you at the jetty.
