Kalkan is a town built on a slope dropping straight to the sea, known for its whitewashed stone houses and bougainvillea. The core, known as Old Kalkan, is made up of narrow, steep streets where most houses have been restored into boutique hotels and terrace restaurants. Those rooftop terraces are the town's emblem — dining above the harbour with the mountains opposite is the classic Kalkan evening.

Kalkan's own beach is small; swimming happens mostly from jetty platforms and in coves reached by boat. The accommodation style the area is really known for is the villa with a pool — most hillside villas are rented with private pools facing the view. Kaputaş Beach lies a short distance east, while Patara's long sands and ancient city are to the west.

The journey from the airport is long and runs along the winding mountain road of the Lycian coast. Past Fethiye the road climbs, twists and continues with sea views throughout.
