Marmaris sits at the head of a deep bay ringed by mountains, and that sheltered setting has made it one of the Mediterranean's largest yacht harbours. Pine forests behind the town run right down to the sea; staying green even in winter, this backdrop sets Marmaris apart from other Aegean coastal towns. The castle and the old bazaar around it form the historic core enclosed within the modern seafront.

Marmaris is also one of the starting points of the blue cruise; gulets leave the marina on week-long tours towards Datça, Bozburun and Fethiye. The town's nightlife concentrates around Bar Street. For a quieter day, the coves of Turunç, Kumlubük and İçmeler and the ferry service to Rhodes offer alternatives.

The journey from the airport to Marmaris is the most demanding route in this region. The road crosses the mountain section known as the Sakar Pass, where a succession of sharp bends and the change in altitude make the quality of vehicle and driver immediately noticeable.
