Ölüdeniz is Turkey's most photographed shore, and it owes that fame to its lagoon: separated from the open sea by a thin spit of sand, this enclosed body of water stays free of waves — which is how it got its name, the 'dead sea'. The lagoon is a protected nature park with no construction around it and a paid entrance. Beside it, Belcekız beach is the lively stretch lined with hotels and restaurants.

The area's second emblem is paragliding. Jumping from Babadağ at 1,960 metres and gliding over the lagoon down to Belcekız is one of the world's best-known flights; in season the sky is full of coloured wings all day. Taking a boat to Butterfly Valley, walking to Kayaköy and the stages of the Lycian Way that start here are the other main activities.

The journey from the airport runs comfortably as far as Fethiye, then descends to the shore on a steep, winding mountain road for the final stretch. That descent is short but continuous and can be uncomfortable with an inexperienced driver. Our team uses the route regularly and keeps the pace steady. Hotels in Ölüdeniz are in three distinct places: on Belcekız beach, up the hillside towards Ovacık and Hisarönü, and within the forest near the lagoon. The roads climbing the hillside are narrow and steep, and some boutique hotels lie at the end of lanes too narrow for a vehicle.
